Work out professional tax by state, from the monthly salary.

Pick the state, enter the salary, and see the tax for the month and the year. It covers 18 states and Odisha, and uses the new West Bengal slabs that apply from 1 October 2026.

How professional tax is worked out

It is a state tax, on salary

Each state sets its own slabs under its own Act, up to a constitutional limit of ₹2,500 a year per person. The employer deducts it from salary and pays it to the state.

The period differs by state

Most states tax the monthly salary. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry tax half-yearly income, and Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Meghalaya tax annual income. The calculator converts your monthly salary and shows the monthly equivalent.

What changed recently

New
West Bengal has new slabs from 1 October 2026: nil up to ₹20,000 a month, then ₹100, ₹140, ₹170 and ₹208 above ₹1,00,000. See the West Bengal page.
Note
Odisha stopped levying professional tax from 1 April 2026, so the calculator shows nothing to deduct.
Note
Bihar, Goa and Manipur are not in the calculator yet. We add a state only after we have checked its slabs.

Questions about professional tax

Is professional tax charged on gross salary or on take-home pay?

On salary or wages as defined by the state’s Act, which is usually the gross monthly salary. Some states leave out items such as bonus or gratuity, so use the state page if your salary has unusual components.

Why is February different in Karnataka and Maharashtra?

Both states charge ₹200 a month for eleven months and ₹300 in February, so the year adds up to the ₹2,500 limit. Choose February in the calculator to see it.

What does half-yearly mean for Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry?

The slab is set on income for the half-year, which is six months of salary. The calculator multiplies your monthly salary by six, finds the slab, and shows the average a month. Your employer may deduct it in the months the state’s rules allow.

Who is exempt from professional tax?

It depends on the state. Common exemptions include persons with disability and, in some states, senior citizens. The calculator does not apply exemptions, so check your state’s page.

Is the result legal advice?

No. It shows the tax under the slabs we last checked. State governments revise these rates from time to time, so confirm on the official site before you file.
